Admission Requirements
(1) To be considered for admission to this course an applicant must have-
(a) a Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent qualification, as recognised by UWA;
and
(b) the equivalent of a UWA weighted average mark of at least 50 per cent;

(c) at least two years professional experience in a relevant occupation; or
(2) significant work experience including at least 5 years with a material level of responsibility.

This course is designed to allow well-qualified graduates to extend their studies in the areas of Psychology or Sociology, either to improve their career prospects or to proceed to higher degree studies.
Entry Requirements

1. Admission to candidature shall be determined by the Head of School on the recommendation of the Course Coordinator.

2. Except as provided in Rule 3., a candidate for admission to the honours course shall:

(a) hold an AQF Level 7 degree of Bachelor of Social Science from the University of New England; and

(b) have attained a minimum grade point average of 5.0 (Credit); and

(c) have achieved 18 credit points at Distinction level or better in 300-level units in their chosen area of study; and

(d) have passed units to the value of at least 60 credit points in the subject in which the candidate wishes to proceed; and

(e) have fulfilled any additional requirements prescribed and published by the school or area concerned.

3. With the approval of the Head of School a person who has fulfilled the requirements of an equivalent AQF Level 7 Bachelor qualification of a university or other institution and who meets requirements considered by the school to be equivalent to those specified in Rule 2. (b), (c), (d) and (e), may be admitted to the honours course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Social Science with Honours.

Please note: This course will no longer be available from 2022 onwards. Please apply for Master of Philosophy (Arts and Social Sciences) instead. The Master of Philosophy involves research and advanced coursework. You will be assigned a research supervisor and an auxiliary supervisor.

Applicants are required to complete a research proposal (500 to 1000 words) addressing criteria specified by the faculty. Applicants must also have been in full-time employment in social work for a minimum of one year, and have one of the following qualifications:

(i) a four-year Bachelor of Social Work or equivalent with 1st or 2nd class Honours; or

(ii) a Bachelor of Social Work (without 1st or 2nd class Honours), either produce evidence to the satisfaction of the faculty of having completed equivalent work or complete a period of probationary candidature; or

(iii) a Master of Social Work with merit.

The Graduate Certificate in Cross-Cultural Practice provides a structured learning experience to navigate different cultural contexts. Throughout this course you will be guided to make sense of your own cross-cultural experiences so you are able to develop an effective cross-cultural practice.
Entry Requirements

A 3 year Australian Bachelor degree or equivalent qualification in any discipline from a recognised tertiary institution.

International students or domestic students born outside of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, South Africa or USA must meet English Language Proficiency requirements. Minimum scores are:

  • IELTS (Academic) score of at least 6.0 (with no band less than 5.5), or
  • TOEFL overall score of 75 with no score less than 17, or
  • Pearson Test of English Academic overall score of 54 with no score less than 46, or
  • Cambridge English Advanced overall test score of 169 (with no individual band score less than 154).

English test results remain valid for no more than two years between final examination date and the date of commencement of study.

Students may be required to undertake police checks when working in particular situations, such as with children, older adults or vulnerable people.

Health Requirements

Students may be required to be fully vaccinated or have other health checks when working in specific contexts.
