About this course

We've carefully designed our Bachelor of Finance to give you core skills in corporate finance, investment valuation, economic theory and data analysis. You'll also have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of majors and minors including accounting, management and international business. Learn in a trading room equipped with Bloomberg Terminals, then use them to get a competitive edge by earning your Bloomberg Market Concepts (BMC) certificate.

Get industry-recognised qualifications. La Trobe University is affiliated with the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute and our Bachelor of Finance covers Level I of their CFA Program examinations.

You may be able to undertake a voluntary work placement with a variety of organisations, enabling you to gain real-world experience while you study. Previous students have completed placements with leading firms like Deloitte, PwC and ANZ. You'll also turn theory into practice through our authentic core capstone subject.

You'll learn:

  • Corporate finance
    • Develop and manage a firm's investment and funding strategy. Critique the ethical basis of financial decisions.
  • Security valuation and portfolio management
    • Analyse financial information and value a range of financial securities using the Bloomberg Terminal. Construct an investment portfolio to meet investor goals and risk profiles.
  • Business data analysis
    • Understand the decision-making processes that govern financial systems. Learn how to use statistics when solving business problems.
  • Investment securities
    • Understand various types of securities and learn how they're issued, valued and traded in financial markets.
  • Risk management
    • Discover how to identify, analyse and reduce uncertainty in investment decision-making.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 7 - Bachelor Degree.

To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Finance, students must complete a total of 360 credit points across 3 years.

Year 1 requires the completion of 120 credit points including:

  • 90 credit points from chosen Core
  • 30 credit points from chosen Electives or major or minor

Year 2 requires the completion of 120 credit points including:

  • 75 credit points from chosen Core
  • 45 credit points from chosen Electives or major or minor

Year 3 requires the completion of 120 credit points including:

  • 30 credit points from chosen Capstone
  • 45 credit points from chosen Core
  • 45 credit points from chosen Electives or major or minor
