This course is a comprehensive survey of the history of art and design, examining the aesthetic and cultural significance of artworks and designed objects from ancient civilizations to the contemporary era. Through an analytical lens, students will explore the socio-political, economic, and philosophical contexts in which art and design have been produced and received, and examine the ways in which they reflect and shape their cultural milieus. The course will cover a range of media, including painting, sculpture, architecture, photography, graphic design, and fashion, and will address issues such as appropriation, cultural hybridity, gender and identity politics, and globalization. Students will develop critical thinking skills and an understanding of the interrelationships between art, design, and society.
