Develop your passion for automotive refinishing and restoration and get the skills you need to paint, refinish and repair the paintwork of range of automotive vehicles, recreational vehicles and other vehicles as a qualified Automotive Refinishing Technician.

This nationally recognised qualification will prepare you with the skills and knowledge you need as a new employee entering the automotive refinishing industry, and is also ideal if you are an existing worker looking to further develop your skills or gain formal recognition for the work you already do as an Automotive Refinishing Technician.

In this course, you will cover the skills and knowledge you need to perform a broad range of tasks painting, refinishing, repairing and maintaining painted surfaces on automotive vehicles, recreational vehicles and other vehicles in the automotive industry. You may also undertake work on non-automotive equipment including industrial machinery and tools.

In this course you'll learn how to follow safe working practices in an automotive workplace, and interpret and apply automotive repair instructions. You'll learn how to remove paint from a vehicle's painted surfaces and prepare vehicle spray painting equipment for use, as well as mask vehicle panels and components, and apply basic colour matching techniques using vehicle paint codes. You'll also learn to apply refinishing primers to vehicle surfaces and prepare vehicle substrates for refinishing, as well as colour matching multi-layer and clear over base two-pack paints on vehicles and components, and match direct gloss solid paint colour on vehicles or components Throughout the course you will gain valuable hands-on experience in preparing and painting plastic and composite vehicle surfaces, rectifying and touching up vehicle paint faults using clear over base two-pack systems, and denibbing, buffing and polishing vehicle painted surfaces. You'll also learn how to apply clear over base two-pack refinishing materials to vehicle body components, and multi-layer and pearl refinishing materials to vehicle body components, and apply water-based refinishing materials to vehicle bodies and substrates.

This course is designed for people who are currently employed within the Automotive Service and Repair sector. To undertake this course, you must have access to a suitable workplace for the practical components of the course and be supervised at your workplace by an appropriately experienced or qualified trades person who is able to sign-off on the workplace practical tasks.

On successful completion of this course, you will have the skills and knowledge you need to undertake high-quality refinishing works on a range of automotive vehicles as a qualified Automotive Refinishing Technician. You might also like to continue your training at TasTAFE and go on to complete the related Certificate III-level course, AUR32116 - Certificate III in Automotive Body Repair Technology.
