This course is perfect for anyone working in visual storytelling, particularly screen professionals such as directors, producers, camera operators, VFX artists, and 3D animators. It involves a combination of in-person teaching, self-directed learning, and online modules.

Taught by experts in filmmaking, 3D animation, and visual effects, you'll have access to the University of Melbourne's new innovative virtual production studio at our Southbank Campus.

Develop dynamic lighting schemes that enhance storytelling

Develop immersive lighting solutions from previsualised schemes that connect, match, and move relationally to both physical elements and virtual assets.

Gain key techniques in colour, shape, texture, and lighting

Discover how choices in colour, shape, texture, and lighting can impact the overall look of an image. Explore how these elements are perceived differently by audiences so you can create more authentic and engaging visuals.

Understand how LED volumes interact with physical and digital elements

Experiment with digital content on an LED volume alongside actors and props to enhance your understanding of how LED volumes affect and interact with real-world elements, whether physical or digital. Gain crucial insights into how this interaction helps shape the production experience.

Create a virtual production that uses effective lighting

Produce a fully rendered final visualisation that includes an effective lighting scheme for stage, prop, and/or actor, based on studio lighting experiments. Present your product and gain valuable feedback from industry professionals.

Course structure

Course details

Lighting and the Final Image runs over five days and includes studio experience via live on-site engagement at the University of Melbourne's VP studio, which features an LED volume.

Your total time commitment will be approximately 42 hours and includes:

  • Studio experience and live on-site engagement
  • Use of real-time engine software
  • Self-directed and guided learning
  • Assessment activities.

Assessment:

  • Production brief and budget: Develop a production brief and fully costed budget that includes technical and other assets such as artefacts/props and actors (30%)
  • Virtual production rendering: Create one fully rendered final visualisation including an effective lighting scheme for stage, artefact / prop and/or actor, based on four studio lighting experiments (70%).
