This short course is for physiotherapists who want to build on their knowledge of radiology particularly as it applies to the neuro-musculo-skeletal system.

Radiology for Physiotherapists is an award subject of the University of Melbourne that has been made available on a single subject basis.

Advance your knowledge of imaging modalities and interpretation

A key focus of this course is image interpretation using a variety of imaging modalities, including x-ray, CT scans, MRI and Ultrasound, to explore normal anatomy and pathological findings.

Understand when and how to use imaging

Gain a better appreciation of when to use imaging, which imaging modality to use for particular conditions, and when onward referral to another clinician may be more appropriate.

Develop your understanding of radiology reports

Advance your understanding of the interpretation and clinical implications of radiological findings. Gain a better understanding of radiology reports to be able to correlate findings with images.

Entry requirements

This course is for physiotherapists with experience in the area of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy.

To be considered for entry, you must have:

  • Undergraduate qualification in physiotherapy, and
  • Minimum 12 months clinical experience in the area of musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

  • If the maximum capacity is reached, the registration will be closed prior to the deadline. Early registration is highly recommended

In order to be considered for entry into this course, applicants must have completed either:

  • Undergraduate qualification in Physiotherapy, and
  • Minimum 12 months clinical experience in the area of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy.

This course is for physiotherapists with experience in the area of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy.

  • Minimum 12 months clinical experience in the area of musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

This course has been developed in partnership with Queensland Health and related agencies. It's been designed to provide expert tailored knowledge to physiotherapists who are looking to extend their knowledge in this area. You will gain skills and knowledge that can be applied immediately within your practice.

The intended learning outcomes are:

  • Advanced knowledge of imaging techniques
  • Appreciation of when and how to request imaging as well as which modality to use for a particular condition
  • Advanced skills in understanding the interpretation and clinical implications of radiological findings
  • Appropriate skills in the interpretation of pathology, with awareness of the limitations
  • A better understanding of radiology reports to enable correlation of the findings with the images.

This course is presented in partnership with the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.

The total time commitment for this course is approximately 108 hours, which consists of 36 hours lectures, workshops and tutorials. And approximately 72 hours of self-directed learning.

Assessment:

  • Case presentation (5 min) (5%) - During teaching period
  • 1 hour online multi-station written radiology exam (50%) - Monday 17th August 2026, 1:00pm
  • Written assignment 1 - 1500 words (20%) - Due date: Monday 21st September 2026
  • Written assignment 2 - 2000 words (25%) - Due date: Friday 16th October 2026

Please note, the venue for the online multi-station written radiology exam will be determined closer to the time and may require some local travel, to be funded by the participant.

You will need to ensure your availability for all components of the program, including the one-hour multi-station written radiology exam on the scheduled date.

The exam is completed in Brisbane for South East Queensland participants. Non-South East Queensland participants complete the exam at the same time/date under local supervision arrangements, which are coordinated by the University.
